Obituary of Francis Donald "Don" Burgess, Jr.

DEMING, NEW MEXICO Francis Donald "Don" Burgess, Jr., 78, of Deming, New Mexico, formerly of Troy, New York, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, November 25, 2020 at Mimbres Memorial Hospital, Deming, N.M. Don was born on April 7, 1942 at the former Leonard Hospital in Troy to the late Francis Donald Burgess, Sr. and Martha Ellen Kiley Burgess Johnson. He is survived by two sons: John Kiley Burgess of Plattsburgh NY and Donald Robert Burgess of Provincetown, MA. Several grandchildren and great grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Ellen (Bonnie) Burgess Wick of Tolland, CT and Colleen Johnson Smith of Bumpass, VA; one brother, Leroy Johnson of Crossville, TN. Don was a 1961 graduate of Catholic Central High School in Troy, New York. He was a talented painter and artist. Don enlisted in the US Navy in 1961 and served on the USS NEWPORT NEWS during the Cuban Missile Blockade. He received an honorable discharge in 1963. Don was a retired New York State Trooper and also was a retired Health Inspector as well. At one time Don also owned a newspaper in Lake George, NY. He was an avid gun collector and loved his cats and reading. He will be truly missed by all his family and friends. Cremation has taken place at Terrazas Crematory in Deming, NM. Don's cremated remains have been returned to his hometown in Troy, New York. Local Arrangements are under the direction of the Riverview Funeral Home, Inc., Troy, New York. Inurnment with military honors is scheduled for Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at 2 o'clock in the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville. Relatives, friends and members of the New York State Police are cordially invited to attend.
