I served with/under Sgt.Ruffer for several months during 1968. I enjoyed knowing him and being under his leadership. He treated all his soldiers with respect & friendship. We shared many conversations about home, family, future hopes & dreams in the barracks or on duty. I considered him as a friend. He was a fine soldier, a really good sergeant, and an even better man. My condolences to all the family & loved-ones. It's a shame he died so young. May God give comfort to you in this time of sorrow. David Bowman Stone Mountain,GA

I am so very sorry to hear about Jim's passing. He and I were very good friends while we served with the 615th MP COMPANY. He was my Patrol Supervisor while I was the Desk Sgt in Bien Hoa, Vietnam 1967-1968. I had attempted to locate Jim in the early part of 2000, but failed. My deepest sympathy to his family. I think of him often. I have a photo of the two of us together in my den.

Sergeant Jim Ruffer was one of my best soldiers in Vietnam. He was a member of the great 615th MP Company "The Bloodhounds" and was quite a guy. When the going was tough, Sgt Ruffer was there. He was a wonderful, compassionate individual and the soldiers in his squad always looked up to him. I could tell by his quiet demeanor that his upbringing in upstate New York was the reason he was such a fine young man. He was only five years younger than me and being from downstate New York, we always shared jokes together. Although Vietnam could be a tough place to soldier, my tour was made easier by knowing and respecting this fine individual. I ran into him again after Vietnam when he was a civilian at - I think - Fort McClellan Alabama. We finally had a few beers together and laughed about our times in 'Nam. I will miss him as will all the brothers who knew him. I remained in the US Army for 29 years and I can say unequivocally he was my best soldier I had the pleasure of serving with during my six months in command. I salute him and may he rest in peace knowing he served America with distinction.
