Obituary of John J. Schermerhorn
John J. Schermerhorn, 78, of Troy, avid independent car dealer and hunter, died Monday, December 29, 2014 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Troy, he was the son of the late Ernest and Anna Dushane Schermerhorn. He was the husband of Joan DeLair Schermerhorn with whom he enjoyed 59 years of marriage. Before his retirement John was employed at Norton Company in Watervliet. After his retirement he was a very active outdoorsman. He enjoyed landscaping and home repair and created his own rock walls on his property.
He also enjoyed working with cars and the many acquaintances he met while doing this. John enjoyed hunting and was overjoyed the year he shot his bear.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Wayne Schermerhorn of Albany, Sharon Martone of Troy and Thomas (Diana) Schermerhorn of Watervliet. He was brother of the late Thomas Schermerhorn and Karen Schriber of Pennsylvania. He was loving grandfather to Thomas (TJ) Schermerhorn, Nicole (Kevin) Mehan, Bryan (Sheena) Schermerhorn and Vincent Martone and great-grandfather of Logan and Carter Mehan, Bryan Schermerhorn Jr. and the late Desiree Schermerhorn. He was also survived by several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Community Hospice of Rensselaer and special thanks to Jaime and Sandy who provided John with excellent care.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a graveside committal service at 1PM on Tuesday January 6th, 2015 at Elmwood Hill Cemetery, 51 Belle Avenue, Troy, NY 12180. Those attending should gather at the cemetery gate by 12:45pm.
