Obituary of Gerald Foster "Jerry" Hinman
Troy-
Gerald Foster "Jerry" Hinman, 76, of Troy, died peacefully at his home on August 26, 2014, a perfect day for golf or a doubleheader.
Born in Troy, he was a graduate of Lansingburgh High School Class of 1956.
Son of the late Robert and Helen (Socola) Hinman, he is survived by his four children and nine grandchildren, Kimberly (David) and Caitlin, Megan and Devon Rooney of Troy, Robin and Colin, James and Elizabeth Nelligan of Troy, Lisa Hinman of Troy, and Gerald Jr. (Heather) and Carley, Ella and Addison Hinman of East Nassau NY.
Also survived by his five siblings, Elizabeth (Bob) Bethel, MaryLou (Joseph) McGuirk, Helen (Joseph) Joyes, George (Barbara) Hinman and Harry Hinman, and many nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by his wife of 36 years, the former MaryDell Ferguson, his daughter Khristian and two brothers, Robert and William Hinman.
Jerry was a machinist with the Ford Motor Company in Green Island for 30 years and also worked with the NYS Dept. of Labor following his retirement from Ford.
A 1961-63 US Army veteran, he proudly served with the 77th Artillery based in F. Lewis Washington.
A three-sport star in High School, Jerry signed with the Milwaukee Braves as a pitcher in 1956 and played in the Braves and Dodgers organizations.
Jerry was a 1995 inductee into the Albany Twilight League Hall of Fame after starring for the Troy Haymakers and other teams in the 50s-60s.
A devoted NY Yankees and NY Giants fan, his love of sports was a lifetime passion second only to his love of his family.
An avid reader, Jerry enjoyed summer family trips to Cape Cod, Fall drives with his wife, countless events with his children and grandchildren, golf with his Frear Park League and his son, and the "occasional" poker night.
His mashed potatoes were renowned.
A quiet man with a wry smile and knowing look, he let his actions speak for him.
His love of family was a constant as was his steady, reassuring presence. In lieu of flowers the family encourages donations to the Rensselaer County Hospice and thanks them for their wonderful support.
